Our history

National Centre for Social Research

Our history

Since we were founded 40 years ago, we've grown to become Britain's largest independent social research organisation with a team of 350 permanent staff and a field force of 1200 freelance interviewers.

Over the past decade we have:

  • Established ScotCen (2005). Please click here to learn more about our work in Scotland.
  • Established NatCen Learning (2006), a leading provider of training and learning events for researchers and research users. You can find out more about NatCen Learning and book a course here.
  • Became a Research Centre associated with the London School of Economics (2008). Together, we are developing a seminar series focusing on key public policy issues and developments within social research. We also hosted our first joint international conference in April 2009. Please visit our events pages to find out more.
  • Won the contract to conduct Understanding Society, the largest study of its kind in the world (2008). Please click here to find out more about this exciting project.
  • Won a grant to run a series of Survey Skills workshops (2009) as part of the Survey Resource Network. These workshops give junior researchers first hand experience of real surveys and the chance to improve their survey method skills. Click here to find out more.
  • Launched NatCen's FrameWork software. Click here to find out more about FrameWork or to buy the latest version of our qualitative analysis tool.
