We are experts in both qualitative and quantitative methods and apply rigorous and robust methodologies to complex social policy issues. But we combine our technical expertise with a commitment to research that is grounded in a deep understanding of the policy areas we work in, is ethically conducted and effectively communicated.
Tailored design
We tailor our approach to the individual needs of each project we carry out.
Breadth and depth of expertise
Our 18 strong team of researchers in Edinburgh work across quantitative and qualitative methods. We run several large-scale national surveys, as well as a portfolio of qualitative studies and mixed-method evaluations. We are experienced in applying evaluation tools like logic-modelling and system-mapping to improve understandings of complex interventions and systems.
In addition to our team in Edinburgh, ScotCen draws on the methodological resources of NatCen, of which we are an integral part. Our specialist survey methodologists and statisticians pioneer new and innovative approaches to survey design. They have led the way in the field of cognitive testing. In qualitative research too, we have played a key role in raising standards of analysis and quality assurance in the UK.
Practical application
Our research has direct, practical application in terms of understanding social behaviour and informing policy. It is used by policy makers and political representatives, the media, academics and social researchers.
