About this study

The recent rioting in England caused considerable damage to lives and property.

We've been commissioned by the Cabinet Office, as an independent organisation with no political affiliation, to conduct research with young people who were involved in or affected by the riots.

Click here to find out how you can get involved in this study.

The study will

Set out the views of young people involved in or affected by the riots.

Gather the views of young people from areas where riots didn't take place.

Collect the views of residents, parents, business owners and community leaders on what they think led to the riots and why young people became involved.

The study won't

Seek to prove or disprove theories as to why the riots happened.

Potential Policy Impact

Our study will provide a valuable and unique evidence base for decision makers in Government and those working with young people who want to understand what led to youth involvement in the riots.

Our methods

We're experienced in conducting research with young people on a range of social topics, and of conducting research on sensitive issues. All of the young people who take part in this study will do so in complete confidence and anonymity.

We'll be using the following methods to conduct this study:

- in depth interviews and small discussions groups with young people in 5 areas of the country that were affected by the riots

- discussion groups with young people in 2 areas of the country unaffected by the riots

- discussion groups with community stakeholders.
